Good morning and congratulations to all who are making the early morning training sessions organised by Merv, Kat B and Geoff.  I am there in spirit with you and when the sun comes up a bit earlier I will be there maybe…!  Another very busy weekend for Mortlake both in terms of club members and preparation for the Veterans Head we have several visiting crews and overseas visitors so please endeavour to make them extremely welcome.  This race is extremely competitive and good luck to all – thanks to the help of launch drivers etc.   Please take care of [...]

MAABC Sportsmanship and Womens Head

I hope that you are all well after a massive flurry of activity for the Womens Head. All week our members had been anxiously looking at forecasts as to exactly what the conditions were likely to be. All of which on the day were not particularly accurate thank you BBC. Always a headache for the organising committee which was located at MAABC I am always amazed at the amount of volunteers who get this iconic event underway thank you all. In particular Giselle and her team of catering volunteers who slaved away all day – thank you so much. We [...]

Weekend 14th November 2015

Dear Members and friends, Before I launch into rowing events this weekend, I just wanted to share with you how Geoff Potts took on the cream of the sculling world in the Silver Skiff event in Turin, Italy last weekend.  This 11k course attracts simply the best, the event was won by Sinkovic in 40.27, Mahe Drysdale was third - Geoff Potts came  with a very respectable time. 51.28 Congratulations Geoff and looking at the photos an amazing event.  Our congratulations to QBC - Tom Bishop won his event in racing 47.51 - lets aim for this event next year. Captains Message – FANTASTIC WEEKEND 7-8 November

Fellow Members, When I went to the Club on Saturday morning I looked out at the Thames and thought not a cat in Hell's chance of seeing our marvellous girls finally showing what they are capable of - here is a secret I even booked to see James Bond film in the afternoon so convinced of my judgement that the race would be cancelled (members may wish to note) So when I watched the crews take off in the most inclement conditions my jaw hit the deck !! I was worried .... But how wrong I was what a fabulous [...]

Captains Blog 2nd November

Another update re what club members have been up to.  One group went off to Henley which is now a huge event, But before I go into detail I want to apologise to Katarina Rolfsman who triumphed in Weybridge Sculls in the Womens Vet C event and I forgot to let you all know sorry and well done Kat.  To underline her domination of the event she won at Henley in the same event.  Deborah Mallinson also put down an extremely fast time - she managed to create a small drama by snapping her sculling blade in half-iterally on the [...]

Captains Blog nr 3

Another week has flown by with lots of activity from MAA members.   We had a good representation at Weybridge Silver Sculls, I myself even braved it – I raced a girl who was just 12 and it was rather embarrassing to have to tell her that she was not even born when I first did the Sculls event.  She then cemented the humiliation by sculling brilliantly and rowing over my head more or less.  She was utterly excellent.  It may be worth noting that the fastest girl was a J17 showing the depth of junior rowing in the UK.  All [...]
