The Diamond Jubilee Rowing Championships were held on 20-21 October 2012 at Dorney Lake.
This was a new regatta, which promised a very high standard of racing as all athletes wishing to trial for the GB Squad this season were required to race in at least one event (excluding 2012 Olympians, although some of them did in fact race for their clubs). The regatta was also run under a new format involving lightweights and open weights all racing in the same event, with only 2 boat classes available on each day.
Fran Rawlins and Anna Roots travelled to Dorney to represent MAA in Lwt 2x and Lwt 4x. After a worrying start to the day where the lake was hidden behind dense fog, near perfect conditions and a weekend of exciting racing commenced.
Saturday was doubles racing for Fran and Anna, starting with a time trial. This was a crucial race as boats were then split into an A/B group of the first 12, a C/D group for the next 12 and so on for semi finals and finals. Fran and Anna finished in 4th position in the time trial out of 44 boats, they went on to hold this position (via a second place in their semi final) to finish 4th overall (3rd lwt crew) in an exciting A final with overlap on the crews in 2nd and 3rd place, and only GB squad members ahead of them. A very promising start to Fran’s trialling year!
On Sunday Fran and Anna raced in a quad with their England crew mates from the summer’s Home International Regatta. Again progressing through the challenging format of time trial, semi final and final, the girls came an excellent 3rd overall (2nd lwt crew) and were presented with their medals by Greg Seale. An excellent weekend of racing – congratulations!
